In the last week or so, I’ve been working on a personal project with the two Year 6 classes at Southborough Primary School. I approached Mrs Savage, the Head of school, with the idea of photographing the everyday life of the children in their final days at Southborough before they go their separate ways and on to their next schools in September.
I’m pleased to say that my plan was received with much enthusiasm and a couple of days later I was let loose in the classroom, to see for myself a little of what goes on once we drop them off in the mornings.
Although we’ve all experienced school as pupils in our time, it’s fascinating to see it from an outsiders point of view and I feel quite privileged to have witnessed the comings and goings. I was pretty much given free reign to document the working day but I was conscious not to disrupt the classes with my presence. Once the initial novelty of having me in their classroom had worn off, they just got on with it.
My aim was to produce a set of pictures that covered all aspects of Year 6 school life but be different to anything that usually comes out of school in the way of set up class pics and formal headshots.
The results will be on display from next Tuesday (19th July) ready for the Open Evening and the Year 6 Leavers Performance the following day. If you are a parent with kids at the school, please pass this link on to any others who may be interested to see. I’ll be posting some more pictures in the next few days.
